So another query I get from clients occasionally is how do I know That I was in a hypnotic trance?
Well this is strange one because clients have all of these weird ideas of what a trance is, how they should feel that has been informed from watching shows on Television movies for example. If you recall my earlier article on "What is Hypnotherapy (Trance) ", I describe what it is and gave you some examples of what similar trances are so you can get an idea of what a Hypnotic trace feels like.
Solely to recap I said that "Hypnosis feels like, precisely the same as when you have your eyes shut! Its that simple".
What Hypnosis is
An awake state
State of Relaxation
State of imagination
Rapport with your Subconscious
Ultimate display of control
What Hypnosis is not
Sleep
State of unconsciousness
State of being weak minded
Loss of self control
So close your eyes and relax and this is precisely what hypnosis feels like, that's all their is to it.
Now saying that there are a few things we will do to show clients that they have been in a hypnotic trance, the 1st one is the hypnotherapist may use convincers to show to the client they're in a hypnotic trance. A convincer is a technique used to get the client to do things that actually demonstrate to the hypnotherapist and client the hypnosis is working. Examples of convincers are, Heavy Eyes - At the count of 3 you'll find that you can't open your eyes event if you try. Heavy Arm - Concentrate on your arm and notice how heavy it is and getting heavier all of the time in reality in just a moment I am going to ask you to raise it and irrespective of how hard you try you can't. Light Arm - Imagine that you've got a piece of string attached to your wrist and a large helium balloon is at the other end of the string, which is floating up and up and your arm will start rising at the count of three it will go up higher and higher being drawn up by the balloon.
Now these are convincers that can be performed when in a hypnotic trance the other place to do them is after finishing the hypnosis and the therapy work with the customer, this is when I usually do the testing/convincers. So the session has finished so how do you know you were in a hypnotic trance and it has worked well we can test the work we have done to see that it now works. So lets return to stop smoking hypnosis client who would like to stop and in the pre-session elicitation we found out that the client smokes almost all of the time when they get anxious and angry.
In the pre-session we worked this out by asking the customer to close their eyes and go back to several memories in turn of when they smoked and we ask them to associate into the memory see what you saw, hear what you heard, and notice how do you feel now just before you made a decision to smoke? They will tell us how they felt at that point exactly. In the post session we do the exact same thing! Make them return to the memory see what they saw, hear what they heard and try as hard as they can to get back any of that old feelings or notice what happens instead now.
The result's they are going to have the memory and they are going to know what they used to feel when they remembered that memory, but this time they won't be able to feel the same emotions/feelings as we have took away the emotions/feelings from that memory! In effect removing the trigger that made them smoke in the first place. We also test the rest we discovered in the pre-session elicitation to confirm that everything has worked and they can't do what they used to do to smoke.
At this state the only thing left is to leave and get into their regular life to start to notice the changes that occur in their behaviour by comparing how they were before the session to how they're after the session in their regular life routine. As a smoker they just wont smoke or feel like it.
